Age: 24
Teaching Experience: 2-4 years
Contract Type: Casual Supply (through calls, emails, teacherbooker etc)
I am in my second year of teaching, having completed my probation year in June 2024. I had an unbelievably positive experience at university, both out on placement and at university classes.
My tutors and placement mentors were all fabulous and supported me amazingly, allowing me to do well. My probation year again was immensely positive. I was lucky to have a brilliant mentor who supported me through it all. I consistently received helpful and constructive feedback to help improve my practice, alongside positive feedback. My university and probation experience secured my passion for teaching.
In June 2024, I was successful at interview to gain a place on my councils supply list. However, come August there were no temporary positions available. I have since been lucky in securing a few days employment here and there but no contracts have been offered resulting in financial insecurity and impacts to my mental health.
While I stand in solidarity with all colleagues who have endured negative experiences, I think it is important to share that even teachers who have had positive experiences are struggling to secure work in the current climate.
I often feel embarrassed sharing my job situation with those outside of the education sector as I feel they will think I can’t secure a post for not being a good enough teacher, when the reality is hundreds of excellent teachers are sitting unused.
