Story 60

Age: 53

Teaching Experience: 5-8 years

Contract Type: Fixed Term

After leaving a permanent post in northern Scotland in December 2021 to relocate to the central belt I have worked in two fixed term positions. Relocation to live closer to family was the right decision, but I feel demoralised by the lack of permanent jobs.

My current post was initially for 6 months. It has been extended, often at the very last minute, by 9 months, 3 months, 6 weeks, 2 and a half months and now 6 weeks until Christmas.

The stress caused by this ongoing insecurity, constantly wondering if this will be the last time is affecting my health. I have undertaken extensive CPD in my own time to up-skill for this specific role, while scanning for other opportunities in case this doesn’t work out. Hours spent writing applications for jobs I have very little chance of getting all while giving the pupils my all. While I am thankful to have been in work for over two years, the constant worry that I am only temporary and I could be out of work with one weeks notice, regardless of the end date on my contract, is debilitating.

The role is clearly needed but the council will not commit to a permanent contract while they can string me along like this. I am worth more respect than this.
